This year, for Food Waste Action Week, here are 6 things you could do to help reduce food waste.
Reducing food waste in the UK is essential, for the environment, economy and society – it’s key to achieving sustainability and tackling hunger. For Food Waste Action Week this year, WRAP are encouraging people to reduce household food waste by buying loose fruit and veg – “If all apples, bananas and potatoes were sold loose, 60,000 tonnes of food waste could be saved every year.”

Plan your meals and shop smart

A simple way to reduce food waste is to plan ahead. Meal plans and shopping lists help you cut down on those impulse purchases and reduce the amount of food wasted at home.
Store food properly

Correctly storing food extends its shelf life – some food is better kept in the fridge, while other food does better at room temperature. Apply the First In, First Out rule and organise your fridge and cupboards to help you use up food before it expires.
Get creative with leftovers

Turn leftover vegetables into soup, and old bread into croutons! More leftovers than you can eat? Freeze them. Our charity cookbook is full of inspiring recipes to help you repurpose surplus ingredients. Check out or buy the book here.
Utilise your local food recycling schemes

Throw your vegetable peelings, cores and stems into your food waste bins so they can be converted into biofuel and fertiliser instead of breaking down in landfill!
Businesses! Donate your surplus with Plan Zheroes

Donating your surplus food with Plan Zheroes is easy. Simply register details of your surplus on our website and get matched with local charities or community organisations who can claim the food – reducing food waste, and getting great surplus food to people who need it!
Volunteer with Plan Zheroes!

Every week, we collect surplus food from traders at Borough Market to help fight food waste and support local charities. Join our team of volunteers helping at the market 6 days a week to collect the surplus food and support local charities and community organisations to receive it. Find out more about volunteering.
