Borough Market collections

We’ve been working with Borough Market to collect and redistribute surplus food to nearby charities since 2014.

Volunteer with Plan Zheroes

Borough Market is our flagship project and to date we’ve saved over 103 tonnes of great surplus food from being wasted. That’s the equivalent of over 246,400 meals reaching people in need, and the equivalent of over 413 tonnes in CO² emissions saved!

For nine years, Plan Zheroes collections at Kings Cross helped make sure good food got to where it was needed, thanks to the commitment of a dedicated team of volunteers, with volunteer Alys playing a particularly important role in coordinating and supporting them.

Impact

1,618 volunteering hours
16,903kg of food saved from landfill
45,245 equivalent meals
67 tonnes equivalent CO2 emissions saved

The decision to end the collections at Kings Cross is a testament to the success of our volunteers. Over the years, traders have increasingly taken surplus food directly to charities themselves or redistributed it among station staff, meaning that more food is now being saved and shared without the need for a dedicated collection. After nine successful years, the Kings Cross collections have achieved what they set out to do – helping to build a culture where surplus food is valued, shared and saved from landfill.

We run collections at Borough Market six days a week, collecting surplus food from market traders, and local charities and community groups come to pick up the food from our collection points.

If you run or trade at a local market and are interested in setting up a surplus food collection or would like to volunteer with one of our existing market collections please email info@planzheroes.org.
