Do your part this Food Waste Action Week 2026

Food Waste Action Week is taking place from 9-15 March 2026 but what actually is it, why does it matter, and what can you do to take part.

What is it?

Food Waste Action Week was launched by WRAP in 2021. It aims to:

1. Inspire practical action that can reduce food waste to save money and time

2. Protect the planet

3. Raise awareness of how food waste impacts the environment

Who takes part? Everyone – from local governments and NGOs to you and your household.

This year’s theme:

‘Make Your Food Go Fuuuuuuurther: for your pocket, for our planet.’

By tackling the parts of life that matter most, Food Waste Action Week hopes to make your life easier and more productive. Each day of the week, Love Food Hate Waste will provide tips to make your food go further for your money, time, planet, health, and headspace.

Why does it matter?

Food waste causes drastic harm to the environment, with 60% of food waste happening in regular people’s homes. This means it is up to us to make a change for the better. Did you know 4.4 million tonnes of edible food gets thrown away by households each year? Hearing these statistics can be scary, but using them to start new habits will make not only you, but our planet, happier.

What can you do?

We aren’t asking you to change your way of life, or alter your daily routine greatly. Simple efforts to reduce food waste at home – something as straightforward as reducing food portions – can make all the difference.

Here are some more ideas:

  • Use your leftovers: e.g. freezing them or donating surplus food to local charities (P.S. if you are a business with surplus food, you can register with Plan Zheroes and have any surplus products collected for a local charity)
  • Store your food properly: keep fruit and veg in its original packaging, put bread in the freezer if you know you will have it for a while
  • Recycle anything that can’t be eaten
  • Compost non-meat food waste
  • Plan your meals: make a shopping list and stick to it
  • Volunteer! Join Plan Zheroes with collecting surplus food from Borough Market to support local organisations
